Aluminium use in European cars continues to grow

A study published today by Ducker Worldwide in cooperation with the European Aluminium Association (EAA) shows that the amount of aluminium used per car produced in Europe almost tripled between 1990 and 2012, increasing from 50kg to 140 kg. This amount is predicted to rise to 160 kg by 2020, and even reach as much as 180 kg if small and medium cars follow the evolution recorded in the upper segments of the automobile industry.

The weight savings achieved thanks to this aluminium content will lead to an average annual fuel saving of 65 litres per car.

A step towards higher strength: Anticorodal®-600 PX and Anticorodal®-300 T61

Two of Novelis’s latest automotive sheet innovations are the Anticorodal®-600 PX and Anticorodal®-300 T61.

Anticorodal®-600 PX delivers superior strength and excellent formability in a lightweight package that can be used for both outer and structural applications. Some 20% stronger than typical aluminium automotive sheet, this material also offers improved formability when compared with other alloys at this strength level.

Anticorodal®-300 T61 has been specifically developed for automotive structural body applications with high crash performance requirements. It offers good formability, a strength level equivalent to high-strength steels (on a weight-specific basis) and an extraordinary energy absorption capacity exceeding that of high-strength steel grades.

E-cars in Paris go ahead with Aluminium

Aluminium sheet is already making electric vehicles lighter. In France, about 3000 electric “Bluecars” form the fleet of a car-sharing system in Paris. This illustrates the growing importance of aluminium solutions for the mobility of tomorrow, when power sources and concepts of utilization change.

All Bluecars have deep-drawn side wall panels made of aluminium body sheet, developed and delivered by Hydro. The concept foresees full recycling of the body; consequently, only one alloy has been used for all parts: AA 6016 T4. Every coil has been produced on the same line at the rolled products plant in Grevenbroich, Germany.
