Energy efficiency is a key element for building’s sustainability

Aluminium largely contributes to it

Thermally-broken aluminium fenestration systems maximize solar gains during the heating season and aluminium shading devices or shutters reduce over-heating during the cooling season. Aluminium ventilated cladding associated with insulating materials reduce energy needs across all seasons. Aluminium and glass provide the perfect combination to ensure a high level of natural lighting inside buildings. Aluminium is also largely used in photovoltaïc and solar heating systems.

These aluminium-based solutions are used in intelligent facades that can decrease energy consumption in buildings by up to 50% and are also very efficient to upgrade the performance of existing buildings.

Detailed explanations and examples can be found in the brochure Sustainability of Aluminium in Buildings and in the two BUILD UP Communities: Windows and Claddings.

The European Aluminium Association joined the BUILD UP initiative as a Partner in January 2010, following an invitation from the European Commission. Replacing the former EPBD Buildings Platform since June 2009, www.buildup.eu is a new environment for building professionals, local authorities and building occupants willing to share their experience on how to cut energy consumption in buildings.
