Aluminium Waste and Recycling Figures
Did you know that?
  • Aluminium can be recycled and re-used over and over again without any loss of quality or performance
  • Aluminium is one of the most recycled packaging materials in Europe
  • Secondary production uses 95% less energy compared to primary production and reduces the EU’s dependence on energy imports
  • It prevents waste from ever being produced through its use in lean production and packaging lightweighting
Recycling aluminium is good for Europe!

Aluminium producers are pioneering industry recycling efforts in Europe, but we are convinced that more can be done to ensure waste prevention and reduction.

Aluminium is essential for fuel efficient transportation, energy efficient buildings, renewable energy production technologies, better and lighter packaging.

How can Europe further unlock the recycling potential of aluminium?

  1. More ambitious recycling targets and a progressive landfill ban of post-consumer goods
  2. Better collection schemes and innovative sorting technologies
  3. Better and transparent reporting of national recovery schemes
  4. Clear and concise definitions of recycling that distinguish between endless material recycling and recycling which leads to the degradation of materials.
  5. Better monitoring the exports of metal scrap and stop illegal scrap and waste exports
  6. The application of sound LCA methodologies to account for the end-of-life recycling credentials of metal products
