Aluminium beverage cans

Over the past decade the total beverage can market in Europe further increased and is now well above 50 billion cans per year. The aluminium share rose steadily and today more than 70% of all beverage cans consumed in Europe are made of aluminium.

Beside Central and Eastern Europe, which demonstrated a high growth pattern in the aluminium beverage can market over the last 10 years, in particular the recent growth on the main Western-European canmarkets is remarkable. The United Kingdom remains by far the biggest market but some Northern European countries also show impressive growth rates. The German market is recovering from the huge downturn at the beginning of the century while some Southern-European countries might gradually switch to aluminium.

During the first decade of the 21st century the aluminium beverage can recycling rate increased with 21% percent points from 43% in the year 2000 to more than 64% in 2009! Based on this positive trend the aluminium industry is convinced that further improvements can be made and together with our partners the can manufactures EAA has set a new overall aluminium beverage can recycling target of 75% for the year 2015 for the EU27 plus EFTA countries and Turkey.

On top, the aluminium packaging industry has joined Metal Packaging Europe (MPE), a new platform promoting the sustainability of metal packaging. MPE has embarked on a pro-active communication policy stressing that metals like aluminium are ‘permanent materials’ which are recycled endlessly without losing any of their quality, contrarily to some other materials. Therefore, metal packaging should not end up in landfills and should be recycled, with the aim to reach an overall average European recycling rate of at least 80% in the year 2020.
