Terminology

Primary aluminium
Aluminium made from alumina during the molten-salt electrolysis process.

Recycled aluminium
Aluminium produced from secondary raw materials, i.e. from old and/or new scrap, turnings and drosses (secondary aluminium).

Refiner
Company producing casting alloys and deoxidation aluminium from old and new scrap and supplying them in the shape of ingots and liquid aluminium.

Remelter
Company producing wrought alloys from mainly clean and sorted wrought alloy scrap and supplying them in the shape of rolling slabs, extrusion billets or master alloys.

Recycled aluminium ingots

Post consumer scrap (old scrap)
Products made from aluminium which at the end of their service lives enter the recycling chain as secondary raw materials

Fabrication or process scrap (new scrap)
Scrap arising during the processing of semi-fabricated products, mostly clean and sorted, in the shape of processing residues, e.g. turnings, residues from punching or stamping, cuttings, runners, risers and rejected parts

Turnaround scrap
Production scrap arising in a plant during the processing of aluminium where it is collected, sorted, remelted and processed.
