REACH is the European Union Regulation on chemicals and their safe use (EC 1907/2006).

It deals with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemical substances. The law entered into force on 1 June 2007.

The aim of REACH is to improve the protection of human health and the environment through the better and earlier identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.

According to the REACH regulation, industry has to deliver a complete dossier of physical, chemical, human health and environmental information to EU authorities, in this case the new European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), with deadlines set for different tonnage bands. For the aluminium industry, this is relevant for aluminium metal, aluminium oxide and aluminium hydroxide, which are produced in Europe, but also for a number of other substances that are imported for use in the production process.
