The European aluminium industry successfully delivers on safety

Brussels, 16 June 2011

More than 50 participants, mainly consisting of safety specialists and managers from plants all over Europe attended the Safety workshop organised by EAA, the European Aluminium Association, in Brussels. The objective of these workshops is to exchange information and gather knowledge about best practices and innovative solutions in order to improve the safety performance within the industry and foster the development of networks among experts in Europe.

This years workshop was dedicated to Fatalities and high risk incidents and included contributions from some of the leading performers in the industry. As safety is one of the major focus of the industry since many years, we notice a marked improvement in indicators like Lost time incidents rate (LTI) and Total recorded incidents rate (TRI) underlined Eirik Nordheim, EAAs Director for Environment, Health and Safety policies.

One of the highlights of this years edition was the Safety Solutions competition, for which member companies were encouraged to present innovative safety measures implemented at plants level. The entries were discussed at the Safety workshop and participants could vote for the best project. This initiative enjoyed a great support and 24 entries were collected for this years competition.

EAA is proud to announce that the following projects were rewarded:

Joint 1st price:
• Aluminium of Greece: Increase plants safety level by enhancing workforce participation.
• Alcoa San Ciprian: Warning device that alerts the presence of a pedestrian close to mobile equipment

3rd price:
• RTA Carbon Savoie: Track incidents by forklift truck drivers

EAA is pleased to announce that the next safety workshop is planned for 2013.
